What is a “living bulletin board” you may ask? It is a board that students can interact with by responding to questions, posting questions, or sharing support via emoji that you can view in real-time. Padlet is a free, web-based application that allows users to create a “living bulletin board”. I wanted to provide students with an alternative method to engage in our synchronous Zoom classes. I used Padlet in my course during the spring of 2020, at the start of the pandemic. Padlet may be the tool you need to engage your students in a remote learning environment. Student engagement in class can be challenging in face-to-face courses, but it can seem nearly impossible in an online course. As universities navigate and manage the spread of Covid-19, many have had to transition to online learning. Padlet is also a great way of giving each other feedback on ongoing work, especially in the case of writing a thesis or persuasive essay.The Covid-19 pandemic has brought with its unprecedented change to higher education. This is especially useful in solving a math problem, where students can use Padlet’s drawing tool to clearly display the steps they took to solve a problem. Using some of Padlet’s advanced tools, students can show their problem-solving process in real-time. After introducing a new topic via Padlet, you can then keep this board open to encourage discussion, student responses, and engagement, adding to your students’ overall learning experience. For example, students may choose to share a photo, post a voice memo, or simply type a paragraph on what this topic means to them. Padlet is a great way to create a discussion board around a new topic and to allow students to share what knowledge they may already have on this particular topic prior to learning. As a result, students can take pride in the work that they’ve accomplished and enjoy feedback and discussions with their peers.
